Loyal #23

Lapjoint Oak and Hard Maple with leather handle

Introducing the winner of the 2023 US boomerang championship aesthetics competition, loyal #23!

There is a lot going on in this one so let’s go! The design is based on loyal #20 but the wings have been shortened for a longer flight, reduced weight and faster spin. The trailing arm and elbow are made with oak flooring from an old bar in San Diego. I demolished the floor myself and was able to reclaim some pieces that were going to be thrown away otherwise. The big crack in the tip of the trailing wing was filled with black epoxy. A gradual ebonization of the oak towards the leading wing creates a stark contrast with the white maple handle. A faux leather inlay in the handle accentuates the handle and again contrasts nicely with the white maple. Four brass tubes were installed in the elbow for decoration and to pull the center of rotation towards the elbow. This gives the arms more lift and a better return.

Obviously I’m particularly proud of this one. I had so much fun designing it and finally presenting it to the judges.
